The five-part system

Panels generate DC electricity. An inverter changes it to AC. Your consumer unit distributes it. A meter records relevant flows. The grid supplies shortfalls and can receive export.

  • Generation changes with irradiance, temperature, shading, orientation and inclination.
  • Panel rating is measured in kWp; annual generation is normally estimated in kWh.
  • A battery stores energy but does not create it.

Generation is not the same as savings

Value depends on when you use electricity, the import price you avoid, the export tariff available and system losses. Two homes with the same array can see different financial outcomes.

What a survey confirms

A competent survey should confirm available roof area, structure and condition, shading, safe equipment locations, cable routes, access, grid requirements and a documented performance estimate.
